1. smart grid is a two way meter. So it is constantly recorded usage information. If there are sudden changes in usage those can be monitored not only for outages but for theft. Losses due to power theft is a big problem in developing countries.
2. Similar enhancements in communication technology on transmission from substations to control center will reduce transmission power losses and improve power qualily
